Why Should You Get Your Dryer Vents Cleaned?

Do you ever give your dryer vents a second thought?  No…don’t worry most homeowners don’t pay any attention to them until something goes wrong.  You can remember to clean out the lint trap on the dryer because it is right in front of you but the vents you completely ignore.  But, over time the vents attached to your dryer collect lint, dust and debris and it needs to be cleaned out.  Why should you get your dryer vents cleaned?  Here are a handful of the reasons why.

Keep Your Dryer Working

At some point you have tried to use a dryer that wasn’t working properly.  You put your wet clothes in and turn the dryer on, come back in 45 minutes or so expecting dry clothes and they are still soaking wet.  You have to turn it on for another 45 minutes before they are even close to being dry.  Not only do you have a pile of wet clothes that you can’t wear but your electric bill is going to go through the roof!

While there are several reasons that your dryer isn’t working properly one of the most common is that warm air can’t circulate because your dryer vents are clogged.  Over time the air flow becomes constricted because of the trapped lint, dust and debris and it takes longer and longer to dry a load of clothes.  Energy costs aren’t the only issues.  Clogged dryer vents are a leading cause of house fires, and that you do not want!

Cleaning Your Dryer Vents

Cleaning your dryer vents is nothing like cleaning the lint trap it is far more complicated.  Right behind your dryer is a big flexible hose that goes to the fitting on the wall where air goes out through the exterior vent.  Professional vent cleaners have specialized equipment that attaches to the exterior vent on the outside of your home along with a vacuum that attaches to the other end inside your home.  It allows them to remove any blockages that might be in your vents along with all of the remaining dust and debris.

You’re probably thinking that doesn’t sound so hard, I can do that by myself.  Not so fast, without the right equipment you may end up doing damage to the ductwork or the dryer.  Either of those things is going to be expensive to repair or replace.  Not to mention that your dryer vents probably aren’t exactly easy to get to. Save yourself the trouble and get the pros into to clean them for you.
